Cambior Omai Bauxite
Linden, Guyana
Guyana, on the northern coast of
South America, experiences a
tropical climate with a long, wet
rainy season. To make matters
worse, the soil is typically tropical
and is stratified with layers of kaolin
deposits, resulting in very high clay
content. |

Duratrays have significantly reduced carry-
back at Omai Bauxite. |
Mine Profile
The Cambior Omai Bauxite Mine in Linden, Guyana, operated a fleet
of Caterpillar 777B series
haul trucks. These trucks were experiencing up to 20-25 tons of
carry-back for much of the year.
The stickiness of the material required regular truck stoppages
to dig-out the dump trays with an
excavator.
In early 2005, Duratray proposed that Cambior replace its standard
steel bodies with 70 yd3
Duratray Suspended Dump Bodies (SDBs). (This capacity body was
necessary to match the
capacity of the older CAT 777B series trucks the mine used.) The
mine chose to trial two SDBs,
which were delivered on-site in July, 2005.
Duratray at Omai Bauxite
The first two SDBs for trials were delivered fully assembled, ready
to drop onto the chassis. The
old steel trays, which weighed 25 metric tonnes each (27.5 US tons),
were parked and the
Duratrays of 16 metric tonnes each (17.6 US tons) were installed
on the trucks.
The reconciled payload immediately increased by approximately
30%, due to the improved
capacity and reduced carry-back. In fact, carry-back was eliminated
in all but the most extreme
parts of the pit, and even in those cases it did not exceed 5-10
tons per load. The movement in
the Duratray flexible rubber bed eventually releases that material
also.
The trial was successful and Omai Bauxite has ordered 12 additional
Duratray SDB's for the rest
of its fleet of Cat-777B's. These SDBs are now being delivered and
installed.
